Please note that on the guestbook page there are some links to other sites in the freewebs system; give them a try and make comments. We will also be adding links to other local sites that will be of interest to Sheppey and Sittingbourne writers. It is expected that we will be linking up with groups from Faversham, Canterbury and other places in the area. As we develop the links so we will find others and add them to the list. For the moment try those listed below.

My name is James Apps and I am the elected chairman of the Sheppey & Sittingbourne Writers' Group based on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. Along with my colleagues in the group I am proud to be part of the Artistic life of Sheppey, a much maligned area of Kent. I write poetry, short stories and longer work and encourage young writers to take their first steps on the rocky road to literary recognition. A life long fan of Pooh Bear, Three Men in a Boat, The owl and the Pussycat, The Goons, Monty Python and motorcycles and a devotee of William Shakespeare's intricate scribblings, I go for the comic and bizarre as well as the deep and meaningful.
As you can imagine, from the above paragraph you will see that the Sheppey and Sittingbourne Writers’ Group are proud of their connection with the Isle of Sheppey. The island is an ancient land named after its ability to graze sheep, famed for its bird sanctuary, the Harty Ferry with its ancient tavern and isolated church, and of late the graceful new Swale Crossing bridge. It is home to modest artistic talent and a unique Naval history and it was here that the Nore Mutiny was based, and where Lord Nelson took his command and dallied with Lady Hamilton. Once a favourite for Londoners as a seaside holiday resort Sheppey enjoyed the prosperity and history of a Naval Dockyard, had its own light railway to Leysdown and a ferry to Holland from Queenborough. Known, sometimes derogatively by outsiders, as "Swampies" the native Sheppey Islander is fiercely loyal and proud to be born on the island and is never slow to remind visitors that Sheppey was home to England’s first efforts at flight. The airfield at Eastchurch was also the setting for the radio programme "Much Binding in the Marsh" and that not far from there is the community of Shell Ness. And even further back than that is the Minster Abbey, an ancient building from where Queen Sexburger herself set out.
The submissions page has guidelines for submitting work to Sheppey Writers and these will change from time to time according to our current theme. At present we are not running any competitions but we expect to do so in 2008. For details of events and competitions see the News Page where the rules of all competitons will be posted.
Subscriptions run from October of each year and are set at £5.00 payable by cheque at present with concessions for the first half year. We do not give refunds.
